A Guide to Selecting Bathroom Cabinets

When it comes to storage and organization in your home’s bathroom, nothing can beat having a specific cabinet (or several) where you store your essentials. Whether you choose above the toilet, under the sink, or next to the shower, cabinets can be the perfect solution to your storage needs! When you are starting a bathroom remodeling project or you are building a new home, always remember to consider the type of cabinet that you want in your bathroom; it is important to make sure that there is more than enough space for your everyday use items, such as soap, shampoo, washcloths, towels, toothpaste, and more. Let’s take a look at a few things to pay special attention to when selecting your bathroom cabinets:

1. Don’t Ignore Your Budget

Before you start your project, it is imperative that you create a bathroom budget, taking your finances into account. You want to ensure that you are getting your ideal design and layout plans for your bathroom while still staying within your budget.

2. Determine the Layout that You Want

Whether you are building your bathroom from scratch or remodeling your old bathroom, it is necessary for you to determine what you want your bathroom layout to be. If you are working on a tight budget, it is best that you work around any existing plumbing, electrical, or water features that may already be in place. On the other hand, if you have a very generous budget, your bathroom may benefit from reconfiguring any existing features to best suit the style and layout that you are trying to achieve.

3. Measure Your Space

Another step that you will need to take is measuring the height, length and width of your space. When it comes to installing bathroom cabinets, dimensions are critical. When measuring your bathroom space, make sure to include the placement of your vanity mirrors, the location of the doors, and the location of any electrical and water fixtures, as well as the distance between the cabinetry and plumbing fixtures.

4. Decide on Your Cabinet Quality Grade

Deciding on what grade of cabinetry you want for your bathroom can be quite a big decision. There are four grades to choose from: stock, ready-to-assemble, semi-custom, and custom.

Stock bathroom cabinets are one of the most affordable options, but they lack a variety of options. Typically, you will have a few styles and materials to choose from.

Ready-to-assemble bathroom cabinetry is the cheapest option to go with and is great for people working on a tight budget. While they are the cheapest option, they are not always the best quality and may need repair or replacement eventually.

Semi-custom cabinets provide both higher quality and a larger variety than these first two options. With semi-custom cabinets, you will be able to choose from several different drawer and door styles.

Custom bathroom cabinetry is great for individuals who have a very generous bathroom budget. These cabinets are made-to-order to suit your style, needs, and budget.

5. Find/Create Your Style

Once you have chosen your unique style, it will be easier to choose what cabinets will best fit your bathroom needs. Are you into modern farmhouse design? If so, you may choose to go with white oak cabinetry. This is the fun part, where you get to design the bathroom that you have always wanted!

6. Select Your Finish

It is important that no matter what grade cabinet you choose, your cabinetry will be able to withstand several different elements over time, including heat, water, and next-level moisture. It is important to note that wood veneers do not hold up well in extremely humid environments.

Important Things to Know Before Selecting Cabinets

  • Where is the plumbing located? It is important to note where your plumbing is located because the vanity connects the sink and faucet to your home’s water lines. Whatever vanity you choose should be able to fit around the supply pipes and hoses, without pinching or cutting off regular operation. It is not advised to move the plumbing lines, as this would add a significant amount to your overall costs.

  • What is the purpose of your bathroom cabinet purchase? Determine whether you are more concerned with functionality and storage options or aesthetics.
